Cradle Coast Regional Land Use Strategy Review

The Cradle Coast Regional Land Use Strategy (CCRLUS) is a strategic planning tool that guides how land is used, developed, and protected across the region. It will implement the Tasmanian Planning Policies at a regional level and guide planning decisions across all Cradle Coast councils.

The current CCRLUS was created in 2010, and most recently amended in 2024. It includes content that addresses:

  • population change, including patterns of settlement, town growth, and activity centres
  • recognition and respect for Aboriginal and historical cultural heritage
  • housing demand, supply, and diversity
  • requirements for infrastructure
  • environmental hazards, protection of natural assets, and emerging climate risks
  • the region’s economic development

The Cradle Coast region has experienced significant change in recent years. This means it’s time to review and update the CCRLUS to help guide how the region grows, adapts, and remains resilient into the future.

The Tasmanian Government, Cradle Coast Authority (CCA), and Cradle Coast councils are working collaboratively to review the CCRLUS.

Councils in the region include:

Review Process

The review is being delivered in two phases, with the aim of having a draft RLUS ready in 2026:

Phase 1 Discussion paper

Work has focused on understanding the profile and priorities of the region. This includes gathering community and stakeholder views on opportunities and challenges.

Phase 2 Strategy development

This stage develops a draft strategy. It considers housing and employment growth, infrastructure needs, and land suitability to create a clear and practical framework for the future.

Although presented in phases, the review is an interconnected process. Community and stakeholder engagement, infrastructure analysis, and policy development occur across multiple stages to ensure the strategy is well-informed and responsive to emerging needs.

By working in partnership, the Cradle Coast councils and Tasmanian Government are creating a strategy that balances growth with community needs, infrastructure capacity, and environmental sustainability.
